Arts and crafts festival moves to popular plaza

By Julie Landry Laviolette, Special Correspondent

March 28, 2014

It was a marriage of art and fashion during the 16th annual Arts and Crafts Festival in the Pines staged recently at The Shops at Pembroke Gardens.

The two-day event, staged the previous three years at City Center, changed venues to expose a new audience to the long-running arts venture, said Robyn Vegas, the city's cultural arts coordinator.

Moving the event "was a huge benefit to the festival because it drew a new audience and we were able to benefit from a lot of walk-up traffic," Vegas said.

More than 20,000 visitors attended the festival, which featured 103 artists and vendors. Visitors strolled through lines of tents, with exhibitors displaying wares ranging from paintings and drawings to glassworks, photography and mixed media pieces.

Artists crafting pieces from wood and clay and conducting painting demonstrations were a big hit with the crowd, Vegas said.

"You got to see some of the process and see the work. It was a great way for families and art lovers to come out and see and purchase art," she said.

There also were plant booths, handcrafted jewelry and ceramics, jazz music and a "Taste of the Gardens" food court featuring a dozen or so mall vendors.

In a children's tent, kids got their hands dirty making their own works of art. The Art of Fashion was the festival theme, Vegas said, so kids worked on projects like designing clothing for paper dolls, drawing faces and making kites.

A new element added this year were the living models — four women strolling throughout the festival exhibiting handcrafted wearable art by Fort Lauderdale  artist Steven Sylvester. It was a fun way to attract attention for the event, Vegas said, with the girls dressed as a black swan, white swan, the life cycle of a butterfly, and "celebration."

"It was fun and fanciful and musical — like living art," she said. "Steven is a very well-known local artist, and he makes dresses out of ceramics and uncommon materials. The girls walked the festival both days modeling these amazing creations. It really created a buzz."

At times the interviews conducted at our office are traumatic for the families. In an effort to diminish the impact on the families during this interview process we are seeking community partners to assist in re-designing our family areas. Hopefully, with the assistance of our community partners, we can create more tranquil areas to improve the experience for the families we serve.

The Sheriffs Office Child Protective Investigators are the first responders in all allegations of abuse, neglect or abandonment called into the Florida Abuse Hotline in Broward County. Yearly we average over 14,000 investigations.

The Child Protective Investigator's (CPI) main function is to investigate allegations of abuse, neglect or abandonment, with the responsibility to ensure child safety while concurrently considering family preservation. The CPIS program in Broward is unique. From our collaborative partnerships with dozens oflocal service provider agencies, our co-located services, i.e. domestic violence, substance abuse and mental health, and community base care partners and our exceptional relationship to all law enforcement agencies in Broward County.

Our centrally located CPIS Office is a hub for family members and the investigators to meet and plan the best course of action for each family's specific needs. Our goal is to create an ambiance at our office that will induce open communication between all parties. To accomplish this goal the atmosphere must feel like a safe haven for both the families and children we serve. This past year, the CPIS Section has been working on redecorating the interview areas to create this safe haven. With the assistance of the Oscar Thomas Foundation and other partnerships we will create this safe haven at the CPIS offices to better serve our most vulnerable population, Children.

Pembroke Pines, FL… January 29, 2014…. Models are needed to participate in a living art experience during the upcoming Art of Fashion: 16th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival in the Pines.  Potential models are invited to attend a casting call on Friday, February 7, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.  at Studio 18 in the Pines, 1101 Poinciana Drive, in Pembroke Pines, where they will meet artist Steven Sylvester,  well known for his uncommon use and application of clay. Models will try on Sylvester’s dresses and walk for the casting. Those selected will receive a digital file photo taken during the Art Festival by photographer Juan Prieto for their portfolio and be included in the Festival program.  Sylvester describes his Ladies' Dress series art in the following way…“In my contemporary clay art series of ladies’ dresses made from clay, wire and other materials, I use the unexpected medium of clay, commonly fashioned into utilitarian vessels and dinnerware, to symbolize the diversity of roles assumed by women in the 21st century. From the safe harbor of home to an arena of mass appeal, women, what they pursue and where they find themselves in the world, are reflected by this series of dresses. My observation of female identity ranges from the private domain of a gardener who lovingly nurtures plants to grow to the nationally televised public humiliation of pop singer Janet Jackson during the country’s most widely watched sports event. Ceramics, wire and other materials are manipulated into representations of what woman accomplish in and out of the public eye. As fantasy abstractions of this form, my dresses respectfully acknowledge all that women accomplish, whether they are connecting with nature or dancing onstage".  Additional artist’s information: www.stevensylvester.net and www. raphaelportraits.com  .

The 16th Annual City of Pembroke Pines Arts and Crafts Festival In the Pines will be held at The Shops at Pembroke Gardens (East of I-75 off Pines Boulevard at 527 S.W. 145th Terrace) on March 8, 2014 and March 9, 2014 from10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m Artist and vendor application deadline is January 31, 2014. “The free Art Festival in the Pines is a two day family friendly cultural event packed with food, fun and of course fine arts and crafts!” said Robyn Vegas, Cultural Arts Coordinator City of Pembroke Pines. “We are again hosting a tent for children to enjoy art activities and many of our talented award winning Studio 18 artists will be on site demonstrating their craft.”

“With thirty-two fully developed recreation facilities covering more than 975 acres, the Parks and Recreation Department annually serves thousands of people of all ages and abilities by providing safe, clean and well supervised parks.  Residents can play a game, learn to swim or just sit back and enjoy nature. In Pembroke Pines…It Starts in Parks.
